I originally posted this under the title of "Ugly Fat Quarters". But I now believe it should be more of a "What was I Thinking" post title. Since beauty is really in the eye of the beholder and not wanting to insult any fabric designer, the post has now been edited appropriately. My apologies to anyone who might have been offended by my original title!
I been thinking about and attempting to use Bonnie Hunter's "Scrap User's System" for about a year and Joan Ford's "Scrap Therapy System" for about six months now. I have cut some of my project left overs into their recommended sizes and begun some of their scrap quilt patterns. But I still have many fat quarters and pieces of yardage hanging around that do not fit into specific projects.
You know those "free" fat quarters you get when you visit a shop during a shop hop or on a bus trip. Or the fat quarters you "win" at your guild meeting as a door prize. Or the fat quarters you bought because they were soooo inexpensive.
None of those fat quarters were the cream of the crop in terms of designs and colors in the first place. After all, there is a reason they were free!
So I have now decided that I need to do something about those fat quarters I was calling ugly but those which really fall into the category of "What Was I Thinking" when I bought this piece of fabric!
Here is the formula.
First cut one strip 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, and 3.5 inches wide by 18 inches long. You have now used 12.5 inches of the 22 inch width of the fat quarter.
Next cut a 6.5 inch strip.
Cut this strip into one 6.5 inch square.
You should have about 11.5 inches left of the original 18 inch long piece.
Use this "left over" piece to cut bricks which measure 6.5 x 3.5.
You can also cut bricks that are 2.5 x 3.5 or 2.5 x 4.5.
You can also cut squares that are 3.5 inches or 2.5 inches, or 2.0 inches or 1.5 inches.
There are options since not all fat quarters are cut the same.
You could also cut the strips 22 inches long across the 18 inch width. In this scenario you will probably have a strip closer to 5 inches left to cut a 5 inch square, then a 1.5 inch strip and a 3.5 x 6.5 inch rectangle, a 2.5 x 3.5 inch rectangle, 2.5 x 4 inch rectangle leaving a 1 inch scrap and a less than 2 inch rectangle.
Once again, not all fat quarters are created equal, so it is a good idea to have some projects in mind while you are cutting scraps. A visit with your favorite scrap quilter, either on the web or from your quilt book library will help you decide which quilts you might want to construct in the future and thus which sizes of strips, bricks and squares you will want to cut in the present.
Managing your stash is never easy. But now those "ugly" or "What Was I Thinking" fat quarters in your stash are usable. They may still be ugly to me, but they are useable!
PS. Straightening strips (identified above as scraps) in case case go to Mom who crochets "rag" rugs. Very little of the yardage and fat quarters is wasted when you practice this cutting methodology!

Living on Easy Street - Heading toward the finish
And working on it day by day!
My Easy Street #1 Quilt is still progressing.
Somehow the blocks seem to be multiplying! I do one block, paying attention to my piecing to make sure all seams match, then place it on my design floor. I look for the next block to piece, count what is left to do and it seems as if the number left to do does not decrease. I thought I could count to 25 but apparently not. LOL!!!
It does look nice and I am pleased with the fabric, colors and arrangement. Thank you Bonnie for another wonderful Mystery Quilt for 2012 - 2013.
One half done....
Hey, did you notice my shoes?
I guess that's why I love the colors Bonnie chose for Easy Street so much!

Easy Street - Part 2
Update on Easy Street
I finished sewing all of the flying geese yesterday and pressed most this morning.
I also cut the 64 rectangles measuring 2 inches by 3.5 inches.
Now to remove the stray threads and the little dog ears.
128 flying geese (plus a few extras) and a 192 four patches (plus a few extra)
and 64 rectangles
Up to date with Easy Street!
Here is the link to Bonnie Hunter's Easy Street Part 2 linky.
Nice to see everyone's progress!

Waiting for Step 2
I am participating in Bonnie Hunter's new mystery , "Easy Street". I have all of Step 1 complete, 192 (plus) four patches. So while I have been waiting for Step 2 (which comes out Friday morning) I have been catching up on the Barrister's Block Sow-A-Long (and a few other projects too). Since I started working on this only two months ago and the group started in February of this year, I am considerably behind. But I am trying to catch up.
Here are the blocks I finished this week.
This group is from the March Sow-A-Long blocks.
Broken dishes - Wannabe!
I mixed up the block as I was putting it together.
That will teach me not to look at the directions.
Guess I will just have to make another one.

Shoo Fly
Churn Dash
I also managed to complete a few pinwheels and a 5.5 inch block with half square triangles. These blocks will go into the "someday" bin - someday the blocks will be used in a quilt. All of these were made from the corners of various flying geese units and were previously pieced as leaders and enders.
It has been fun accomplishing all of this while waiting for Step 2.
Is it Friday yet???

Midnight Flight
Ok, I am going to whine. Just thought I would prepare you!
I have been looking at Quiltmaker's Block Party which is coming up in March 2013 in Portland, Oregon. Since I was not able to go the the Williamsburg Block Party this past summer I thought I would try for Oregon. You know, nice city, great activity (quilting), great teachers (Bonnie Hunter, Jo Morton just to name two of them).
But when I started to price it out! OMG!!!
The fabric I could buy for that money! The flights alone! This was not going to happen!
So I continued to dream and printed out every teachers' supply list for a class I was interested in taking IF I were to go. I looked more closely at Bonnie's offerings. I decided to try to make my own "Block Party".
Midnight Flight appealed tonight so this is the first and maybe only block to make me feel better for not going to Oregon in the spring.
The block is fairly easy and is reminiscent of my doing "Orca Bay" in that there are small elements which fit together to make an 88 piece twelve inch block. As you can see in the picture, not too shabby, if I do say so myself.
This could be a new quilt while I wait for the next project to present itself.
